Tour Guides with Portal in front of Neue Wacher Berlin Version 2

WHAT IS ZAUBAR?

ZAUBAR is a start-up from Berlin (Germany) that develops city tours with augmented reality that feel like time travel. Tour guides, museums and memorials can thus create immersive experiences – quickly and without prior technical knowledge. The startup developed a platform for this, on which historical photos and videos can be transformed into augmented reality city tours. This works by placing exposed historical images and videos exactly at the place where they were once taken.
Hero with clients
In November 2019, ZAUBAR published his first project together with the biggest Berlin newspaper “Tagesspiegel”: the AR app “Tagesspiegel 89/19“, which enabled people to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall by taking an AR tour along the former course of the wall with historical photos. In addition to cooperations with the several media houses in Europe, ZAUBAR released his AR app “The Liberation” in September 2020 in cooperation with the german broadcasting service Bayerischer Rundfunk and the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site (theliberation.br.de) due to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the camp by the US-army on the 29th April 1945.

On April 29, 1945 – 75 years ago – soldiers of the US Army liberated the Dachau concentration camp. 32,000 people were imprisoned there at the time – debilitated, sick and malnourished. In cooperation with the startup ZAUBAR, the broadcasting service BR and the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial site present the stories of the liberation from a new perspective in an augmented reality app on an interactive tour, accompanied by eyewitnesses of the liberation telling their stories.

NOMINATED FOR THE PRIX EUROPA

“Die Befreiung AR” was awarded the PRIX EUROPA 2020 in bronze, the most important prize for European broadcast media projects.

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality is a technology that was developed much further in the last years so that now everybody can experience it on almost every new smartphone and tablet. AR means that digital content such as photos, videos and 3D objects is placed and laid over the smartphone camera to enrich the view of the real world with these elements.

How is ZAUBAR working with tour guides?

ZAUBAR helps tour guides creating immersive AR tours to bring their offered experience to the next level of edutainment. Using augmented reality, tour guides can quickly and easily create immersive tour experiences. The platform allows them to independently create a tour of interesting places using just their smartphone. This is done by uploading historical photos or videos to the app, enhancing them with the AI-powered pipeline, cropping and converting them into 3D experiences, and then allowing users to place them in augmented reality in the real world. That followed, these AR tours can be given in a multi-user tour experience in the streets or as a live-streamed AR experience – enabling an unprecedented on-site storytelling opportunity for historical content.

GUIDED TOURS

Guided tours are city tours where the tour guide uses augmented reality as part of his tour. This means that the guide hands out iPads to the guests in addition to his normal tour. When he selects a scene at a location on his iPad, all guests get a synchronised experience of the photos, videos, sounds and 3D objects – in life-size and directly at the location where they were taken through the iPad camera. They then can get close, experience them and take interactive AR photos and videos.

LIVESTREAM TOURS

Livestream tours are like guided tours on the ground except that the audience experiences live on the internet what the tour guide is showing through its device. This means that the tour guide conducts a city tour with augmented reality and the AR content is streamed as a video during the tour. In this way, viewers can take part in the tour via livestream and see the placed AR scenes without having to take part in the tour themselves on the ground. This way, tours that take place at a certain location can be shared with interested people worldwide. The tours can be streamed online on several social media platforms which allows the tour guides to directly use or expand their reach there.
