Berlin/Bautzen. Making memorials a digital experience – this is the motto of the latest project “Bautzen II – Virtual Exploration of the Stasi Prison”, which was developed in cooperation between the Berlin startup ZAUBAR and the Bautzen Memorial. From August 9, 2021, history buffs, and those who want to become one, can go on a virtual web tour through the former Stasi prison in Bautzen II and get an insight into the transport, the everyday life in prison and the surveillance of the prisoners. The date was chosen on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the arrival of the first inmate of the new Stasi prison Bautzen II on August 9, 1956.

The web tour “Bautzen II” is an innovative scrollytelling experience that anyone interested can experience via their web browser. The new online offering is intended to appeal to young people in particular, who are encouraged to get to grips with the former SED regime. The viewer walks through the 3D model of the area and buildings with the help of a virtual path, which has been supplemented with historical photos, texts and audio recordings. For example, one can listen to the memories of former inmate Sigrid Grünewald about how she was brought to Bautzen II.

This experience is made possible by the Webtour CMS specially developed by ZAUBAR for easy creation of 3D tours in the browser.
